Many residents and tourists often recount that the night skies here in Greenwood County have brighter stars than anywhere else they’ve been. As it turns out, it’s not lore – it’s science!

The Bortle scale is a nine-level numeric scale that measures the night sky’s brightness of a particular location. The scale ranges from Class 1, the darkest skies available on Earth, through to Class 9, inner-city skies. Here in Greenwood County, we’re ranked a Class 2 – which is impressive given that places ranked Class 1 include Antarctica and Northern Siberia.

By day, Greenwood county is teeming with rolling hills & beautiful prairie but after sunset our more remote landscapes light up anew under glowing celestial, starry skies. Far away from urban light pollution, our dark skies come alive at night with boundless stargazing opportunities.
