A vote of 228 landowners for and11 against created the Greenwood County Soil Conservation District. Organized by farmers in 1950 the District is based on State Soil Conservation District Law of 1937. The purpose was to conduct a coordinated program of erosion control and the conservation of soil and water on farmland. Five farmers, two appointed by the State Soil Conservation Committee and three elected locally, would act as the initial governing body known as supervisors.
