Severy

In 1883 Gould City was renamed Severy in honor of Luther Severy a director for the Santa Fe Railroad Company.  During this time a fierce battle was waged between the Santa Fe and Frisco Railroad crews to be the first to reach the junction at Severy.  Frisco won by secretly working at night and they put up a toll gate so the Santa Fe would have to pay to go through.  In 1880, when it was incorporated as a third class city it was called Gould City, but after 1883 it became Severy and has kept the name since.
