What is a deed?
A deed is the document that transfers ownership of real estate. It contains the names of the old and the new owners and a legal description of the property, and is signed by the person transferring the property. You can't transfer real estate without having something in writing, which is almost always a deed.
Who is the Register of Deeds?
The Register of Deeds is an elected official who makes certain the documents are recorded properly according to the laws of Kansas and maintains and preserves those records.
Who makes new deeds?
The Register of Deeds always recommends consulting your lawyer, an abstractor, or title company. The Register of Deeds office is a recording agency and therefore cannot make out deeds or answer those questions which pertain to legal matters.
What if I lose my deed?
If deeds are misplaced or lost a copy may be obtained from the Register of Deeds.
